Color Field Painting - Colour fields of avant-garde painting
Colour field painting is commonly referred to as the breakthrough in painting that helped it achieve the kind of autonomy that is finally referred to as modernism.
Stella Hettner, who lives in Mewegen, reacts to the flood of media images with extreme flatness, abstract sign language and the renunciation of gestural traces. "I want to avoid my pictures having anything transcendent about them," she says about her withdrawal from the sphere of meanings and sensations. To achieve this, she accepts that her paintings often appear decorative. Whether the artist paints on paper or on canvas - the pictures always comment on systems that refer to themselves. The painter regards image manipulations, which have been developed for the electronic media and have long since influenced our viewing habits, such as an unnatural colourfulness, as additional possibilities and freedoms of her profession.
