Otmar Alt

"Art that has to be explained is boring," Otmar Alt states, aiming in particular at freedom in art. Artistic action is therefore first and foremost free action.
Born in Wernigerode in 1940, the exceptional artist studied painting at the Berlin Master School for Arts and Crafts and then at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin. He quickly became part of the artistic avant-garde and is now one of the most important artists in Germany. From his point of view, art should not be elitist, but accessible to everyone and also at any time.

He takes the view that art itself is not necessarily bound to a specific purpose; it is neither about conditions nor does it have to fulfil certain expectations. Otmar Alt sees himself in painting, graphic art as well as sculpture and design, although his work also crosses the boundaries of these different genres, sometimes uninhibitedly. He designs stage sets for plays, for example, but also children's toys and imaginative sculptures made of ceramics and Murano glass.

Alt has long delighted the art world with his colourful, cheerful works, while remaining vehemently true to his own distinctive visual language. He paints pictures that do not close themselves off to the viewer, but appeal to him. His works usually appeal even to those who are otherwise rather hostile to modern art.

The figures in his paintings seem to escape from a strange, allegorical world populated by imaginative people, animals and plants. This is conveyed primarily by the applied abstraction and intense colourfulness. With this fairy-tale symbolism, the representative of the so-called "New Figuration" carries the viewer off into the world of his dreams. In addition to figurative motifs, there are increasingly works in flat biomorphic forms, which are brought to life by decorative colours and put together like puzzle pieces. It is the versatility in form and design that reflects Otmar Alt's joy in experimentation, curiosity and energy.

To promote young artists, the renowned artist founded the Otmar Alt Foundation in 1991, which, among other things, provides studio space for young artists on the Otmar Alt estate through a scholarship programme.

The name Otmar Alt is a familiar one in the art world. His works have been exhibited in many German museums, galleries and art associations and can still be seen in numerous exhibitions. Since 1964, the artist counts well over 300 exhibitions of his own spread throughout the world.

"I wish that my paintings contribute to a more humane way of dealing with each other." - Otmar Alt
