Buying acrylic paintings - a trend and the emergence of a new painting technique

Buy acrylic paintings, if you are interested in the backgrounds, you will find what you are looking for here: It all started back in the middle of the last century. At that time, painters used acrylic for their pictures for the first time, initially in the form of industrial paints, later as special products from artists' paint factories. Acrylic resin was produced as early as 1915, but its development into an aqueous acrylic resin dispersion was not completed until almost 20 years later (1934) at BASF.

The production of acrylic resin paints from artists' supplies based on polymerised acrylic acid esters gained importance at the end of the 1940s in the USA and at the beginning of the 1960s in Europe. At that time, the acrylic resins could be increasingly finely dispersed, which spurred the emergence of acrylic paintings. The better the colour film turned out and the higher the colour fidelity, the more popular acrylic paint became as a material in painting.

Acrylic Paintings from 1950-1970: Pop Art & more

After the discovery of acrylic paint for art, pioneers such as the expressionist Morris Louis, the founder of action painting Jackson Pollock or Frank Stella as representatives of analytical painting, hard edge and colour field painting used it for their works. In the 1960s, some artists were already working exclusively with acrylic paint. The resulting acrylic paintings were henceforth referred to as "acrylics"; new art movements such as Pop Art emerged and made artists such as Andy Warhol (1928-1987) and Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997) immortal. In the 1970s, Keith Haring, Jörg Immendorff and other figurative painters also focused on acrylic paintings.

Over the decades, acrylic has had an influence on the history of painting and beyond, in the United States as well as in Europe. The novel forms and colours reflected the desire for closure with the past, as well as progress, departure and change, which broke through on both sides of the Atlantic. And even today, acrylic painting transports messages and moods in a very special way through its expressiveness and special colour effect.

From a purely technical point of view, however, acrylic paint acts as a supplement or alternative to classic oil paint. Most of the known painting techniques can be used to create acrylic pictures - application with a brush, painting knife, painted with a palette knife, comb, optionally diluted with water as a glaze. Analogous to watercolour painting, acrylic binders can also be used to lay down thin glazes; modelling pastes and special gels create structure and effects.

One challenge is to calculate the correct drying time, which is usually extended with appropriate agents. With a suitable procedure, the paint remains slightly glossy and as an elastic film on the painting surface, whereby even thick layers dry without cracking, which in turn opens up a wide range of creative possibilities. In principle, any grease-free surface is suitable as a painting surface, such as metal or wood in addition to canvas.

The contributors to the Inspire-ART collective take up the possibilities offered by acrylic paint and use them, for example, to realise abstract motifs. One example is the impressive canvas painting and acrylic painting "The View Back" by Lydia Schade, which was created using acrylic mixed media and spatula techniques on canvas. It, as well as the works by Yosi Losaij, Michaela Steinacher and the other artists, can be viewed on the Inspire-ART website.
