Modern pictures in acrylic
The most common painting technique today is modern and abstract acrylic painting, which is a unique means of expression and style for every artist and thus an optimal complement to oil paint.
A relatively short drying time allows other working techniques, but can also be artificially delayed with various painting agents. The acrylic paint can be applied to the canvas in impasto technique with artist's palette knives, brushes or painting knives and, due to its flexibility, dries completely crack-free even in thicker layers. For glazing techniques, the acrylic paint can be thinned with water or acrylic binder. Acrylic paint adheres to a wide variety of substrates such as canvas, metal or wood, although solid painting supports are used for highly pastose painting techniques. By means of modelling paste and other structural agents such as effect, fibre and metallic gel, exciting changes in colour shades can be achieved. Structural paste is the most commonly used painting aid, which is applied with a spatula or comb, for example, and then coloured.

Oil painting - modern paintings in oil technique
Modern art sees oil painting as the most demanding challenge. The brilliance of the colours and their durability are unprecedentedly excellent. Painting with oil colours was already used in the 13th century, and was later further developed by the painter Jan van Eyck to finally overcome the threshold of mixed techniques.
Oil painting still plays a significant role in modern art today. Modern Watercolour and Watercolour Painting
A watercolour is typically created with non-opaque, glazing watercolours on paper (e.g. handmade paper or Japanese paper). Normally, a round brush is used to apply the paint, which is passed over the paper in different techniques (dabs, turns). Versatile painting techniques such as glazing, wash, the gradient technique and the wet-on-wet technique characterise watercolour painting. Watercolour painting was once used for re-colouring ink drawings, later, since William Turner (18th century), also for independent picture development. Elke Memmler is a recognised and successful representative of watercolour painting.
