Modern Art

Modern Art - Contemporary Art

"Modern art" as a term is not defined in a delimiting way. In common usage, it describes the avant-garde art of the 20th century, but it was used well before that. Thus, no concrete style can be defined, which makes the transitions from and to other art forms fluid and prevents a clear classification. This is one of the reasons why, for example, the technical language uses the term "modern art" and thus generally refers to all developments since the 1870s. We embrace this diversity and field of tension and use it creatively.

Overview: History and development

The aforementioned abstract painting is not only an example of modern art, but also exemplifies the departure from the principles of occidental representations that had prevailed until then. While up until the 20th century, painters and artists in general were still characterised by realistic depictions, the increasingly popular abstract art movement fundamentally changed this. From then on, the focus was on composition and the ordering of colours and contrasts, as well as lines and geometric constellations in a more or less pronounced way. This development was fed not least by modern progress in the economy and society and also by catastrophic events such as the world wars. Abstract collections and non-objective portraits also served as the nucleus for later forms of art, such as Pop Art and Happening, as well as Fluxus, Situation Art and Conceptual Art.

Examples with thematic classification

If one takes a look at paintings created in the 19th and 20th centuries, the great diversity of variations under the collective term "Modern Art" becomes apparent. While some works, such as "Rain, Steam and Speed - The Great Western Railway" by William Turner, depict the new achievements of mobility in contrast to the prevailing landscape painting of the time, paintings such as "Doubt" by the Expressionist Edvard Munch or "Esto es peor" ("This is worse") by Francisco José de Goya y Lycientes focus on the individual-emotional or the unsparing depiction of personal suffering.

The Dadaists, in turn, often resorted to the stylistic device of parody and in this way showed their aversion to the conventional art form and bourgeois society of the time. At the same time, they set important impulses by breaking with conventions. Apropos: One of the most radical and at the same time most controversial works of art in this respect is certainly the series "Black Square" by Kasimir Malevich, which consists of squares painted in black and surrounded by borders painted in white.

Modern or contemporary - works and landmarks

In the 21st century, one might think, a new art movement is emerging on a global scale with the claim to worldwide and borderless contemporaneity. This term sets itself in opposition to modernism. It is striking that both in the naming of galleries and in the catalogues of art houses, the term "modern" is increasingly being replaced by "contemporary". The term contemporary has apparently already replaced the epoch of modernism.

What is different?

Contemporary art is largely different than modern art ever was. But what ultimately makes the difference? It is striking to observe that the worldwide art fairs and biennials have already realised the turning point of this epoch. The regular exhibitions and art fairs have recently begun to present a conglomeration of regional and international art, and this at regularly changing locations for a cosmopolitan art-loving community of interest. Today, the art style of contemporary art mostly puts political and cultural problems critically in the foreground.

Recognition

In the so-called modernist art period, artistic trailblazers reached into the future to leave their mere contemporaries behind and bring forth a new artistic epoch. Today, on the other hand, many artists are primarily concerned with being perceived as contemporary at all or with being recognised as modernist artists. They no longer want to be condemned as zero beginners or newcomers. So the only choice is between unconditional conformity (painting what pleases the buyer) or admitting to being ideologically different.

Abstraction: The recourse to the simplest anthropological forms such as stick figures - to follow as elements in a system of codified gestures. These proved to be the most useful model to express the reading of the world. The makers experimented with pictorial logic and developed a standard notion, incorporating attempts at sign spaces and signals. Many works balance between semantic clarity and simultaneous opacity. Abstraction is the consequence, an attempt to reach abstraction with reduction. "The figurative has remained because the whole theory or philosophy is related to the figure, the image of man, to procedures, processes related to man." Stylistically, the works on offer are far removed from the "required realism".

Important exhibition halls and museums

Important exhibition spaces for the presentation of these art styles in Germany today include the Pinakothek der Moderne (Munich), the Neue Nationalgalerie at the Kulturforum Berlin and the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen K20 in Düsseldorf. The latter collection includes important positions by Pablo Picasso, Piet Mondrian, Henri Matisse as pioneers of Impressionism and Paul Klee as a representative of Expressionism. But representatives such as Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Frank Stella, Joseph Beuys, Gerhard Richter, Tony Cragg and Katharina Fritsch also make their mark on the permanent collection.

The represented artists of the modern century present themselves particularly extensively as painters of the present time. On closer inspection, the epoch of colours and colourful art movements and collections of the modern era can be glimpsed pictorially. An attempt to deal with the epoch of modern sculptures and modern sculpture style - directions. In doing so, there is basically no constraint: editing or reworking works seems to expect an analytical and at the same time poetic examination. However, it is difficult to work on the collections and works of the current time with scientific theories and concepts, art movements and painters of the past century. A modern style that can be extensively analysed for art prints and sculptures opens itself up to freely edit collections.
