Often we also find answers in a painting

Sometimes it is a picture showing "Peter in the animal park" with which Harald Hakenbeck imprints himself on our memory.  Or it is the "Water Lilies" that simply do not disappear from memory. Many art lovers may simply not be able to get the eyes of the "Sistine Madonna" out of their minds. Thousands of visitors look at her constantly, and she bears this curiosity silently. It is the forms, the moments, the pictorial moments that literally fascinate us so much. And who doesn't remember them fondly: the visits to museums, the excursions, the weekends when many culture lovers went to a museum with their family to discover paintings.

The moments of inspiration

The museum was and is an impulse generator, a first address to get an inspiration. And it is precisely this inspiration to which we are addicted throughout our lives. What used to be mere objects for viewers are now cultural assets, art objects, paintings - which we like to bring into our own four walls.

The impressions in a painting that occupy us for a long time

If we only allow it, we recognise more than an object in a painting. A painting can become sensual and seduce us. Everything begins with memory. Or does it start with a painting? When we look back, memories quickly catch up with us. In how we saw a painting for the first time. Where was it? Was it the first picture book? Was it the first drawing? Was it the pictures in our parents' flat? Or was it the pictures at an exhibition that left the greatest mark on us? Probably it is a mixture, and probably the moment is part of the contemplation. Because everything we store in all our memories, we associate with special experiences.

Memories to be uncovered

The stories we are told about a picture. The anecdotes we associate with an exhibition. Or is it a mixture of many? Is it the feelings, the smells, the memories, the thought of a sheltered childhood that bring a picture to our attention again and again? At the latest when we succeed in giving free space to memories, then surely an image also comes into play. The stag - the twelve-footer, the memory of a landscape, the feast for the eyes of a lily pond or the smile of the little angels at the foot of the Sistine Madonna. Paintings are what we are looking for.

We search and find

Paintings are what give us a home. Be it in a church or in an exhibition. We find paintings unerringly, as if we had a good nose, a feel for a painting. Can you remember what first fascinated you? Was it the child in the zoo, the little coat, the cap, reminiscent of your own childhood? The surprised expression in the eyes? The arms held still, touching the body as if unconcerned? Was it the special water lilies that give the pond a special aura? Flowers that turn the simple into something special? Was it the little angels at the feet of the Sistine Madonna? What are the paintings that move you?

What must a painting have?

Does it always have to be paintings or is it sometimes replications, art prints, photographs that suddenly open your heart? Certainly, a special fascination emanates from all these pictures if the motif particularly appeals to us. However, paintings have a very special charm due to their brushwork, their colour composition, their composition in any case. For the paintings literally breathe. They lead our thoughts from one point to another. And if we succeed in building this bridge from the first brushstroke to the last point, to the last sequence that makes up this special composition. If we succeed in following these individual steps and not missing anything, then we are firmly united with a painting.

Foreign and yet familiar

This situation is not entirely new. Kings, rulers, knights - everyone has fallen for this fascination of a painting. Virtually succumbed. For there was nothing more lasting than to fix the face on canvas, on wood, on a piece of paper. In this way, it was possible to capture a memory of the person, of a moment, of a landscape. And our great task now is to rediscover this moment, this indescribable uniqueness.

Forget space and time for a moment in a painting

Sometimes we manage to reconstruct precisely this situation, to pack it into our thoughts - and then this painting sometimes occupies us for a lifetime. Many like to remember their first incisive and perhaps even somewhat overwhelming visit to a museum. That smell of many people, of old things, of preserved ideas, of people meeting, the many fleeting impressions. Suddenly it is no longer noticeable whether we walk past the paintings or the paintings parade past us. And in the middle of it all, a small dot, even a small chaos of forms can build up into a large painting. But in any case it remains a picture for the memory. It is, or can become, a piece of home; this stimulus to look. A fixed point. That holds us, that gives us a sense of security.

Is only symmetry an expression of beauty?

Not the light that passes by unannounced, anyone who does not want to see it will certainly never notice it. Many who have never turned a painting over in their mind will hardly notice this loss consciously. But for those who make the effort and tap intentions, query ambitions and hang paintings, the moment of looking at them turns out to be a richness.

The feeling of an image

What can be, that is this feeling - what is it about an image? What can we recognise? What can we see? What remains hidden from us? What does the artist want to hide? And then we occupy ourselves with a picture for minutes, hours, days. And always driven by the questions: Does it convey a sense of security? Does it repel me? Does it cast a spell on me? Paintings are far more than the mere construction of a likeness. They are snapshots that hold a little something in store for us, a surprise that we like to freeze.

Where to put all the looks?

And trapped by our memories, we then sometimes go in search of the update for the rest of our lives. We are touched in the best Sin - once we have become addicted to a painting, we search for a copy in very different places. We go on journeys, wander in nature and in museums to find the lost painting again. And we have become accustomed to interpreting what we see in a particular way, to questioning, questioning and seeking answers. We have long since said goodbye to the question: What does the sight want to trigger in us? Aesthetics is overlaid by meaning. Where we discuss intimately, our impressions recede into the background and the viewing must become billable. In this way, we no longer seduce ourselves. The associations that connect us to a painting must be tangible. But that is precisely what freedom, creativity and art do not deserve.

Paintings - When art loses its end in itself....

Then, at the latest, we lose a great treasure. For we are not always interested in the colourful and imaginative depictions on wood, canvas or paper. It is the stories behind the pictures, behind the paintings, that fire our imagination. Paintings are and often remain a part of our lives.

Can you even remember the smell of the museum? The sound with which you were greeted by the people in the museum? The conversations of the visitors next to you? And it is precisely with these memories that you come to a gallery - where all this suddenly becomes tangible. Colours, shapes, ideas, sketches, pictures... everything that occupies you. We have been working for many years with artists who, like you, are fascinated by a painting. Whose entire conception of the world is united in one picture. Together with you, we find images that move you, images that remain in your memory, images that make moments unforgettable.
