Abstract painting is a form of artistic expression and style that found its origins at the beginning of the 20th century.
| The first abstract works of art were created at the beginning of the 20th century. So far, it has not been clarified which artist is considered to be their essential originator. However, the painter Wassily Kandinsky (*1866 - †1944), born in Russia, is basically considered one of the important pioneers. The painter Francis Picabia (*1879 - †1953), born in France, also experimented and changed his style several times from Impressionism to Cubism to abstract painting. |
He, too, became involved with the essence of non-objective painting very early on and is generally regarded as one of the pioneers of this style.

Development of this art movement
Abstract painting is a collective term for various art movements of the past century. It was decisively influenced by the modern painting of abstract expressionism, which the painter Jackson Pollock (*1912 - †1956) moved internationally and decisively.

It is striking to observe that today in abstract painting, non-objective positions are forming in ever new variations. A perpetual change and constant further development cannot be overlooked. New painting techniques and ways of working, partly accidental, partly planned, conspicuously reveal two obligatory directions, the painterly tendency and the geometrical direction. However, it is easy to see that abstraction has successively always produced a completely independent pictorial language.

Abstract or figurative - an attempt at interpreting non-objective art
Abstract painting is a form of expression in the visual arts, which already established its beginnings in the first years of the 20th century. This art movement mainly shows characteristics of non-objectivity and generally distances itself from real objects and from nature. One therefore also speaks of "non-objective or objectless art". Here, a reference to an object is only partially (suggestive forms) or completely (non-objective) relegated to the background. From a purely conceptual point of view, abstraction is defined as "detached from the objective" and can be equated with "alienated from the real image".

The Beginning and the Protagonists (Pioneers)
Painters such as Wassily Kandinsky and Frantiek Kupka are regarded as pioneers of non-representational art. Their art, which is far removed from the present, is far different from what painting had ever been before. Kandinsky's career began with stylised forms modelled on Munich Art Nouveau and ended with completely non-objective realisations of organic forms. In the process, he went through numerous phases of development. In 1910, he wrote a groundbreaking paper entitled "On the Spiritual in Art", which provided a theoretical basis for a hitherto completely new direction in painting.
Hilma af Klint is considered one of the first artists to paint abstract pictures, according to a report in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (2011). Other protagonists of abstract painting were Francis Picabia, Robert Delaunay and Piet Mondrian.
Abstract art gained great importance with the advent of photographic technology, which made it possible to depict real environments in a revolutuionary way. The representational form of expression threatened to become superfluous.

The main currents
Immediately after Kandinsky's (1866 - 1944) beginnings, two main currents soon emerged. The emotionally influenced current, which came from Expressionism, strove for complete detachment from the representational. In this, later gestural, free painting, colours, structures, compositions and forms came to the fore and seemed indispensable. Representatives of this movement are Ernst Wilhelm Nay and Hans Hartung.
At the same time, a more intellectual, geometrising abstract painting emerged, which later developed into "post-painterly abstraction". Representatives such as Mikhail F. Larionov, Kazimir Malevich and Piet Mondrian completely dispensed with a personal signature in this art form influenced by Cubism. Geometric forms serve as an essential stylistic device to represent or depict the invisible, the inner world of the artist.
Both currents distance themselves from reality-based representation. Cultural roots, such as those of Greek culture and the "representation of the human being" that goes with it, are extensively alienated. This visibly opens up an all-encompassing freedom in painting and sculpture.
Abstract Painting & Abstract Expressionism
In terms of content, this abstract form of expression speaks of the abolition or complete detachment of the representational. Abstract painting sums up art that carries no memories with it and contains no hint of a visible being.

The variety of artists working in this style is indeed huge nowadays. Every now and then, one comes across abstruse, unrecognisable and confused abstract paintings. In order to realise abstract painting in style, the means of geometric abstraction were often used. A subdivision into surfaces, clear lines and geometric figures were the core and thus emblematic of the origins of abstraction. Consequently, Constructivism also made use of mathematical forms of construction, which is typical of it. In Expressionism, on the other hand, spontaneity proves to be an essential building block, perfection hardly plays a role any more.
Neo-Expressionism and Expressionism in the narrower sense also move away from the representational in their ways and are also counted among the abstract art movements. Expressionism emerged from the artists' association (KG) "Die Brücke" (The Bridge), which was founded in Dresden in 1905 by the four architecture students Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Fritz Bleyl, Erich Heckel and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. In the Expressionism of "Die Brücke", colour and form strive for a pure form of expression. The motifs, such as nudes or landscapes in free movement or in nature, respectively, characterise the inner experience of the environment and the feeling of the artists themselves.

The artists' group enjoys curated new acquisitions every year. Since 2008, the art gallery has experienced very strong demand from artists, people with an affinity for art and those interested in art. Undoubtedly a tranquil marketplace for captivating modern painting, fresh original art and respectable abstract positions. Since 2015, the group of artists has been delighted with the two newcomers Conny Niehoff and Conny Wachsmann, who feel emphatically at home in large-format artworks and particularly strikingly in commissioned painting.
Both work in a process-oriented manner and create convincing art, but predominantly abstract painting in a distinctive and appealing form. Targeted colouring, such as colourful colouring, striking contrasts also have a significant influence on harmony and effect, and are generally regarded as mood brighteners for dreary walls. Those who prefer abstract painting in black and white tones with light painterly colour accents attach importance to a room concept of contemporary art in that the artwork corresponds with the already existing room climate.
