Artworks from Susann Kasten-Jerke
Soft contrast of complementary colours
Susann Kasten-Jerke - The graduate of the Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts lives the complexity in her paintings. A wafer-thin multi-layered pictorial structure of forms, colours & materials, which mutually condition and inspire each other, create a tension between the elements, which appears delicate and powerful at the same time, determine her paintings. Seams mark interfaces, old connections are loosened, new contexts emerge. Experimenting with forms, colours and materials determines the artist's work. |
Kasten-Jerke redefines painting. She does not chase after trends, rather she processes everyday life, everyday events in her paintings. Her works generally focus on a colourful, almost delicate choice of colours, which is definitely also combined with strong hues, as well as on lines and shapes that repeatedly set accents. In her most recent representations, something new can be observed: The artist succeeds in creating the illusion of spatiality, which is essentially due to her wafer-thin multi-layered pictorial composition. This way of working gives the viewer a noticeable lightness in the paintings.
Her painting, the play between concentrated smallness and wide, calm surfaces, which correspond with each other and create tension, speaks directly to the viewer. The artist describes the effect of her painting on the recipient as an 'ART of breathing through'. Important to her is the working process, the concentrated immersion in a world all of its own, which develops in the process. The picture is created without following a specific idea in a constant dialogue. There is a certain euphoria during the working process, in which the artist explores the heights and abysses of abstraction with material and motif. The real life, - takes place in art - the Kieler says about herself: 'Painting enriches my life, already a splash of colour, a surface can touch me!'
