Almut Basta

Janosch, alias Horst Eckert, is one of the most important children's book authors and illustrators of the 20th century. Works such as "Oh, how beautiful is Panama" and "Mail for the Tiger" shaped entire generations. The stories, illustrations and drawings not only received prestigious literary awards, but also numerous art, culture and film prizes. To date, Janosch has published over 150 books.

His imagery is mostly humorous and still bears an unmistakable style today. Despite sometimes hidden criticism of society, his works are always full of amusing details. Imaginative elements of language are often reflected in his paintings as thoughts. Conversations and sayings result in an often pleasurable, fun composition in his watercolours and etchings. Janosch was born on 11 March 1931 in Hindenburg in Upper Silesia. He currently lives on Tenerife. Even as a three-year-old, he wished for an ink box with his desired colours of gold, silver and pink. Despite his not easy childhood, Janosch went his way and never stopped dedicating his life to art until today. According to him, the most important time in his life was his apprenticeship as a blacksmith, which he started at the age of 13. It was during this time that he was shaped by the guiding principle, "There really is nothing that can't be done." At the age of 19, he met Gerhard Kadow at the textile college he was attending in Krefeld at the time. Kadow was a student of Paul Klee, which greatly influenced Janosch. In 1953 Janosch moved from Paris to Munich and began to study art, which he dropped out of after a few semesters because of "lack of talent". When his work as a freelance painter and artist did not bring him any success, he did not hesitate and decided to become a writer in 1956 after a friend advised him to make a children's book out of his drawings. Janosch actually owes his name to his publisher Georg Lentz. Due to a mix-up and a crazy idea, he advised him to call himself "Janosch" from now on.

In 1993, he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit in recognition of his work as an artist.
The tiger, the tiger duck and the bear are still known to many children today, even though Janosch has largely retired since 2010. Except for a column in the "Zeit", he no longer publishes drawings.
