Artworks from Petra Klos
Gestural-dynamic painting style with considerable expressiveness
Working method
In her pictorial compositions, Petra Klos succeeds in constantly reprocessing her present emotions, fantasies and moods. Power, assertiveness, energy, as well as the artist's immediate sense of colour are consistently reflected in her abstractions. She brings together disparate things, loves to experiment with materials and has a keen sense of exemplary arrangement of colour and texture. Using stylish and symptomatic painting techniques, the artist manages to express these qualities in colour and form with pronounced passion and enthusiasm. A style that stimulates reflection, one's own interpretations. The Berlin-born artist says about herself: "For me, the picture surface is "a field open on all sides", so that many of my works appear - despite their limitations imposed by the format - as a section of a larger whole. In all this, I prefer simplicity in form and consistently aim for the effect of colouration and structure in the surface, with the colour red playing an important role alongside earth tones."
In the meantime, the purely emotional, non-representational works are repeatedly complemented by abstract landscapes. The artist tries to reflect the impressions Petra Klos gets on her travels through her own interpretation. Thus, in the list of her works, one finds abstract, thoroughly colourful landscape and coastal pictures alongside the completely non-representational, often monochrome and colour-reduced works. She deliberately abandons the real depiction of what she sees and allows her impressions to flow into the colour compositions.
Initial successes - in 2002 Klos received the Plaidter Kunstpreis - brought the artist national recognition and greater reach. In addition to significant solo exhibitions in major European cities and public purchases, for example by the Neue Pinakothek in Munich, the artist Petra Klos has also made an international name for herself in the USA.
