Fusion of two art genres

The mixture of formal perfection and seemingly pure elegance as well as a pronounced love of painting characterise the works of artist Marita Tobner. Thus, the painter creates snapshots against the backdrop of the insights she has gained into everyday life; she skilfully puts together trivial things to create entirely new arrangements of her own. Her style is unmistakable: Draconically and in perfect composition, she directs the viewer's gaze to manifold aspects of human existence, their nature and their interconnections and contradictions to and among each other. This view of the origin of her creative points connects many of her works. All motifs live from the unique depiction of an instinctive controversy between calm and dynamism.

Tobner does not see herself as a classical painter, her invigorating painting opens up much more to the viewer: in her works she plays with the visible and the hidden at the same time. She combines floral elements with figurative ones and thus creates a lifelike, mostly colour-intensive picture composition. Marita Tobner, born in 1961, lives and works as a freelance artist in Ulm. She is in demand at international art fairs in the USA, Switzerland and Italy and has been mentioned in art projects in New York in the meantime.

Working method - combination of woodcut and painting

The Ulm-born artist has dedicated her art to a significant theme: The love of life. To this end, she collects experiences from her everyday life, which she compresses into her paintings in a constructive and planning-oriented way; in the process, visual images of her everyday life and her very own stories emerge. Her ideas for pictures are not only derived from experiences she has had, but also from literature. Characteristic of the artist is also the fact that the titles of her works are often already fixed before production and individual stylistic elements are only searched for afterwards. In this way, new intuitively composed elements always flow into the composition of the picture. Marita Tobner deliberately places abstract and figurative elements in an exciting dialogue. Currently, the artist is working on a far-reaching art project that is important to her personally: she would like to intensify her defined field of tension by focusing on the relationships and interconnections between people. However, her elementary way of working does not change at all: currently, new mixed media works are being created in her studio in Ulm, always in a combination of woodcuts and painting.
Marita Tobner herself says about her art: "My works are created serially in mixed media, i.e. a mixture of acrylic, oil, woodcut or linocut, collage, painting and drawing. The intention is to achieve maximum variation - also in the image statement - with the different techniques and materials. My intention is to make visible the inner experience in dialogue with the outer realities of women's lives per se. To uncover the interconnections and also contradictions of human existence and thus to put them up for discussion is a great concern of mine."

Marita Tobner is a member of the art associations Neu-Ulm, Senden, Künstlergilde Ulm, [Kun:st] International Stuttgart, Crossart International Cologne, as well as the Freie Künstlergruppe Ulm/Neu-Ulm.
